The film's story begins in Pennsylvania, where Steven, Michael, and Nick are celebrating their bachelor party. They are close friends and work together in a steel mill. Soon after, the men are drafted into the military in Vietnam.
The horrors of the Vietnam War are quickly revealed to them when they are captured as residents of a small village. There, they are forced to participate in Russian roulette, a dangerous game in which players put a gun to their heads and spin a revolver. This leaves a lasting mark on the men as they survive the clutches of death.
They eventually manage to escape and return to the United States, but they are changed men and their lives have been shaken. Steven becomes a wheelchair-bound war veteran struggling with adjustment and disability. Michael, on the other hand, suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and tries to help his friends cope. In Nick's case, the traumatizing effects of war lead him down a path of mental fragility and despair.
The film is an exploration of friendship, survival, and the psychological wounds caused by war. It also deals with themes such as duty, abandonment, and finding one's own identity after the horrors of war.
Towards the end of the film, Michael decides to travel back to Vietnam to find Nick, who has fallen deep into a cycle of illness and addiction. Michael's attempt to save his friend ends tragically, but he is finally able to accept the past and move on with his life.
