Shaun Brumder (Hanks) is a sharp and talented Southern California surfer searching for direction in his life - until he stumbles upon a novel by Martin Skinner hidden in the sand. Inspired by the book, Shaun is overcome with a burning desire: to leave his backward Orange County and study creative writing under Skinner at Stanford University. Getting into the prestigious institution is not easy, and so Shaun must enlist the help of his girlfriend Ashley (Fisk), his troubled parents (O’Hara & Lithgow) and his cloud-shy brother Lance (Black) to make his dream come true.
