The film's story follows young Johnny Rico, Carmen Ibanez, Dizzy Flores and other characters who have just graduated from school and joined the Earth Defense Force. They join a battle called "Bugs", where human soldiers fight against the Arachnids, a species of intelligent insects.
Johnny and his friends are sent into their first battle, which turns out to be very dangerous and bloody. They witness the Arachnids' cruelty and ability to form attacks from the ground and space. During the war, they learn to survive, fight and cooperate with other soldiers.
The film also features a political backdrop, where young soldiers are forced to consider their citizenship and responsibilities towards society. Alongside the war, they must consider the meaning of freedom and justice.
