The story is set in 1948, ten years after the events of the first film. J.J. Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is still a private investigator in Los Angeles and this time he finds himself involved in a complicated plot involving the divorce of a famous businessman and construction contractor, Jake "J.J." Gittes (Harvey Keitel).
Jake Gittes is assigned to oversee the investigation while the other Jake searches for evidence of his wife's infidelity. However, as Jake investigates the case, he soon discovers that there is much more to the divorce than just infidelity. He plunges deeper and deeper into a tangle that hides deceptions, murders and secrets related to the city of Los Angeles, which is run by power and money.
The story also involves various characters, such as a femme fatale (Meg Tilly) and a mysterious businessman (Rubén Blades), who all contribute to Gittes' search. The plot progresses in a complex and mysterious way, as Jake tries to uncover the truth and find out who is responsible for the mysterious events.
