The story begins in April 1945, when Nazi Germany leader Adolf Hitler (played by Bruno Ganz) is hiding in the Führerbunker in Berlin. The threat of defeat in the war is growing and the surrounding cities are already under Allied control. Hitler surrounds himself with loyal followers such as Eva Braun (played by Juliane Köhler) and high-ranking military leaders such as Heinrich Himmler (played by Ulrich Noethen) and Joseph Goebbels (played by Ulrich Matthes).
The film follows Hitler's final days in the bunker as his regime crumbles and despair spreads. Hitler's mood swings from rage to depression as he realizes that the war is lost and his empire is collapsing. At the same time, the bunker's inhabitants are faced with anxiety, fear and decisions about what will happen next.
