Hayao Miyazaki's script is based on Mary Norton's novel The Hidden Figures, which is being republished in Finnish in honor of the film. The story of the film has been moved from England in the 1950s to modern-day Japan. The film takes place in a single-family home on the outskirts of a large city. The area is surprisingly similar to Ghibli's home town of Koganei on the outskirts of Tokyo. Young Arietta lives with her family under "human" floorboards. When she turns 14, she joins her father on a loan trip. Arietta meets a normal-sized boy named Sho. According to the first rule of the Hidden Figures, one should never let "humans" see themselves, but Arietta cannot help but listen to her heart. An affection flares up between the young people, which helps them both find themselves better.
The classic story is full of Ghibli magic. French composer and singer Cecile Corbel has composed the timeless music and the beautiful theme song, which she performs herself in English and Japanese. The extraordinary scale of the objects and things opens up amusing and exciting perspectives to the story.
