The main character is David Erneman, a respected doctor and family man. He has been married to his wife Marianne for several years, but their relationship has become frozen in routine and distance. David begins to suspect that their love is fading.
David decides to find out what love really is and begins to explore it from different perspectives. He goes through his memories, talks to his friends, and seeks advice from a psychotherapist. David also ends up meeting his former lovers in an attempt to find answers to the mysteries of love.
As the film progresses, David meets different people and their life stories, which reflect many different perspectives on love. He meets, for example, a man who has cheated on his wife, and a young girl who has dreamed of love. These encounters challenge David's own perceptions and make him reflect on his own relationship with Marianne.
