The story begins in 1958, when 15-year-old Michael meets Hanna Schmitz, an older woman. A passionate and secret relationship develops between them. Michael visits Hanna frequently, and their meetings often focus on reading literature aloud.
However, one day Hanna suddenly disappears without explanation, leaving Michael heartbroken and confused. Years later, while studying law, Michael is forced to meet Hanna again. He discovers that Hanna is accused of complicity in Nazi crimes during World War II.
Michael follows Hanna's trial and becomes aware of her shameful past. Hanna keeps a secret about an incident in the concentration camp that partly explains her actions. Michael is forced to consider justice, morality, guilt, and his own feelings towards Hanna.
