The story is set in Russia during World War I and the Russian Revolution. Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif) is followed through different stages and encounters in his life. He has to live in the midst of both love and political upheaval.
As a young medical student, Yuri falls in love with Tonia Gromeko (Geraldine Chaplin), but also meets another woman, Larisa (Julie Christie), with whom he falls deeply in love. However, their love is complicated, as Larisa is married to a revolutionary artist, Pasha Antipov (Tom Courtenay).
After the Russian Revolution, Yuri marries Tonia and they start a family. However, fate reunites him with Larisa, and their forbidden love affair is rekindled. They are forced to live in constant fear and uncertainty as war and revolution shake the country.
The film depicts the intersection of an individual's fate with major historical events. Yuri is forced to balance his own passions, his responsibility to his family, and his patriotic duties. He is both a witness and a participant in Russia's historical upheavals.
