Tony (Frank Sinatra) is a scoundrel who dreams of playing a big shot, and who always has a checkmate in his wallet. Although the carefree widow is short on money, he does have one asset: his son Ally (Eddie Hodges), who selflessly loves and adores his father.
When Tony asks his wealthy brother, Mario (Edward G. Robinson) for a loan - who disapproves of Tony's swinging lifestyle - the brother agrees to the loan on one condition: Tony must calm down or give up custody of his son! Tony may be desperate, but he would have to be smart to agree to Mario's terms... right?
