They beat him. They took something from him. They mocked him. They broke his heart. But they couldn't break his spirit.

Bullied at school and neglected and abused at home by his indifferent mother and older brother, Billy Casper, a 15-year-old working-class boy from Yorkshire, tames and trains his pet cuckoo, which he names Kes. With the help and encouragement of his English teacher and his schoolmates, Billy finally finds a positive purpose for his unhappy existence.
