The plot is set between 1988 and 1991 and follows the relationship between FBI agent Clarice Starling (played again by Jodie Foster) and Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). The film begins three years after the events, when Clarice is still traumatized by the events at the end of The Lamb.
The Lamb focuses on the cat-and-mouse game between Clarice and Hannibal. Clarice is still employed by the FBI, but she has run into internal problems within the agency. Her reputation has suffered, and she has been transferred to a position where her talents will not be utilized. However, Clarice's career takes a new turn when she is assigned to find and capture a new serial killer, dubbed Buffalo Bill by the media.
Buffalo Bill is a brutal murderer who kidnaps and kills young women. He also specializes in wearing a skin suit made from the skin of his victims. Clarice realizes that her only hope of catching Buffalo Bill is to seek help from Hannibal Lecter, who is now in prison. Hannibal is an intelligent and manipulative serial killer, but he has a deeply developed sense of empathy that can help Clarice understand Buffalo Bill's methods.
As the film progresses, Clarice and Hannibal develop a special relationship based on mutual trust and play. They have many intense conversations, in which Hannibal gradually reveals his deeper traits. At the same time, Clarice tries to gather clues about Buffalo Bill's identity and how he chooses his victims.
The film reaches its climax when Clarice tracks down Buffalo Bill and is forced to confront the killer personally. The film offers suspense and psychological twists as Clarice tries to save her victim while protecting herself.
"Scapegoat" is a dark and intense thriller.
