The historical film takes a look at the strict rules of life in New York's upper class in the 1870s. Newland Archer is a lawyer in the better circles who desperately needs content in his seemingly empty life. Newland is engaged to the beautiful but very class-bound May Welland. However, May's unconventional cousin, Countess Olenska, attracts Newland's attention more effectively.
