In 1947, a radio operator receives a strange signal from Roswell and disappears without a trace.
In the present day, the same signal is detected in Antarctica, where scientists are conducting plant experiments at an isolated research station. Cryptologist Julian Rome (James Spader), a former S.E.T.I. researcher, is called in to investigate the origin of the message.
A black capsule is discovered beneath the ice, sending a coded message – and when it is opened, it is revealed that the message meant “Do not open!”
An alien creature and a deadly virus are released from the capsule, melting victims from the inside out and spreading rapidly. When the government learns of the threat, it orders a Russian submarine to launch a nuclear weapon at the research station before the pandemic spreads. Rome attempts to communicate with the creature and realizes that it was not attacking – but rather warning people.
The film deals with human curiosity and the consequences when science and politics collide with moral boundaries.
Visually, Alien Hunter makes use of the cold, isolated Antarctic setting and early 2000s digital effects.
The tone is serious but entertaining, and Spader brings the charisma of an intelligent, slightly cynical scientist to his role.
Critics found the film to be an entertaining but clichéd sci-fi thriller that borrows heavily from The Thing and Aliens. The IMDb rating is 5.2/10, and the Leffatykki website describes the film as “a throwaway piece of junk that doesn’t get the most out of the subject matter.”
Alien Hunter is a small but ambitious sci-fi thriller that offers a cold and claustrophobic atmosphere, Spader’s confident performance, and the idea that sometimes the biggest threat isn’t from outer space – but from human curiosity.
