Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee has risen to the heights of Hollywood with his big-budget genre films, but these 90s comedies and dramas were his starting point, and were retrospectively labeled the “Father Knows Best” trilogy.
Exploring class and cultural conflict, the three films combine to deal with tension through comedy. Each film stars Ang Lee’s regular collaborator Lung Sihung as the central character of the stepfather. The films achieved critical and commercial success not only in Taiwan but also internationally, putting Ang Lee in the global spotlight.

Pushing Hands (1991) – Imprint Asia #26
An elderly man (Sihung Lung), who has lived through the Chinese Cultural Revolution, moves from Beijing to New York, where his son (Bo Z Wang) is married to an American woman (Deb Snyder).
Ang Lee deals with culture shock, the old man's reluctance to learn English, and the ego-explosions of his daughter-in-law.
The film's title comes from the Chinese tai chi movement, in which one tries to unbalance the opponent so that one's own balance is maintained or improved.

Wai-Tung (Winston Chao) is living a happy life in Manhattan with her husband Simon (Mitchell Lichtenstein). Unfortunately, Wai-Tung is too shy to tell his parents that he is gay and is constantly filling out dating profiles to please their elders.
Eventually, Wai-Tung ends up in a backstage relationship with his tenant Wei-Wei (May Chin), who needs a residence permit. Of course, Wai-Tung’s parents hop on a plane in China and take over the massive wedding planning.
Winner of the Golden Bear and five Golden Horses at the Berlin Film Festival, The Wedding Party was nominated for an Academy Award and was a box office success upon its release.
