An accident occurs in the laboratory and a deadly virus is released, infecting everyone in the Hive. The computer responsible for maintaining the Hive has shut down the Hive and spread a paralyzing nerve gas throughout it. The computer does not let anyone in or out, thus preventing the virus from spreading. A group of commandos is sent to the Hive to prevent greater destruction.
They also find three people found in the area: Alice (Milla Jovovich), a commando member who has lost her memory due to the nerve gas, and Spence (James Purefoy), who also suffers from amnesia, and Matthew (Eric Mabius), who introduces himself as a police rookie.
Once they arrive, they all realize the seriousness of the situation, and completing the commando team's mission and getting the team out of the Lair no longer seems so simple.
