The story follows Joel Barish (Jim Carrey), a quiet and withdrawn man who has had trouble with relationships. One day, he meets a young woman, Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet), who is impulsive and free-spirited. A strange and twisted romance develops between them.
When Joel wakes up one day to find that Clementine has completely erased him from her memory using an innovative technology that erases memories. Shocked and heartbroken, Joel decides to do the same and contacts a company called Lacuna Inc., which performs memory erasures.
In the film, Joel goes through an imaginary journey through his memories as the Lacuna Inc. staff, including Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson) and technician Stan (Mark Ruffalo), erase Clementine's memories from his mind. During the journey, however, Joel realizes that he does not want to lose all the memories he has of Clementine. He tries to resist the erasure and hides in his own mind with Clementine.
