The story follows Eddie Morra (played by Bradley Cooper), a writer struggling with a lack of creativity and the difficulties of life. One day, he meets an old acquaintance who introduces him to a new type of pill called NZT-48. This pill promises a huge boost in thinking and memory.
Eddie tries the pill and finds its effects amazing. He starts taking it regularly and finds himself becoming increasingly intelligent and successful. He is able to remember everything, learn quickly and make smart decisions.
Eddie's life changes completely when he uses the abilities of NZT-48 to succeed in business and achieve wealth and power. He also seeks the help of politician Carl Van Loon (played by Robert De Niro), who sees potential in Eddie's intelligence.
However, Eddie begins to realize that there are dangers to using NZT-48. He experiences side effects and a sense of addiction. At the same time, he becomes involved in a dangerous conspiracy where his life and freedom are threatened.
