The film, oozing with sex and psychedelia, was made on a shoestring budget and grossed millions of dollars, surpassing the box office success of, among others, the blockbuster King Kong and becoming a cult favorite. The Mitchell brothers' films launched the golden age of porn, on the crest of which they rode the entire decade.
