The story is set in the 1920s and follows the lives and sporting careers of the two main characters, Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams. Eric Liddell is a Scottish Christian runner who believes that running is his way of serving God. Harold Abrahams, on the other hand, is of Jewish background and faces prejudice and discrimination in his efforts to succeed as a runner.
The film follows both athletes' preparation for the 1924 Paris Olympics and their personal struggles. Eric Liddell faces the pressure to reconcile his sporting and religious values, while Harold Abrahams struggles with his own self-confidence and feelings of being an outsider.
