The story is set in the 1930s, when George VI is crowned king. However, he has a serious speech impediment that hinders his public appearances. George VI's speech impediment causes him great anxiety and embarrassment, especially when he has to address his people over the radio during World War II.
The king's wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), decides to seek help and finds Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), a speech therapist and actor. Lionel takes on the responsibility of improving George VI's speech and helps him overcome his fears and insecurities.
Lionel and George VI begin an intensive and unusual speech therapy session, where they develop trust and friendship with each other. Lionel helps the king find his voice and speak confidently. George VI's journey is full of challenges, but he shows great determination and fighting spirit to overcome his speech impediment.
