It is midsummer in 1946 and Rut wakes up in a Basel hotel room next to her husband Bertil. Rut recalls her romance with Raoul that led to pregnancy, Raoul's double life and betrayal. On the train back to Stockholm, Rut and Bertil argue intensely about infidelity, alcohol use and their financial situation.

At the same time, Bertil's ex-lover Viola is wandering around a deserted Stockholm and runs into an old classmate. The lonely Viola accepts the offer of a drink and finds herself…
