Based on Jeffrey M. Shaara's best-selling book, The Sword of God brings to the screen the early years of the American Civil War, with its alliances and fierce battles. Ronald F. Maxwell directs this epic, richly detailed film, which is set chronologically before the events depicted in Maxwell's classic film The Battle of Gettysburg.
The story centers on three brave men and three fateful battles. The soldiers are Joshua Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels), "Stonewall" Jackson (Stephen Lang), and Robert E. Lee (Robert Duvall). The battlefields are Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville.
Through these fighters and these battles, we witness the bravery and plight of a nation at war with itself.
