German troops are marching towards Paris, but a German refugee, Georg (Franz Rogowski), manages to escape to Marseille at the last minute. Georg is carrying the documents of the suicide writer Weidel in his luggage, which he uses to forge his identity. Marseille, however, is only a stopover. Among Weidel's papers are letters and a visa confirmation from the Mexican embassy. With his new identity, Georg tries to get a place on a ship traveling to Mexico.
