The story is set in the early 1900s, when Karen Blixen (played by Meryl Streep) travels from Denmark to Kenya with her husband Bror (played by Klaus Maria Brandauer). They settle in a coffee shop, which Karen continues to occupy after Bror's dishonesty and betrayal are revealed. Karen is left alone in Kenya and begins to grow coffee on her own farm.
In Africa, Karen encounters a variety of people and cultures, including local tribesmen, British colonialists, and pilot Denys (played by Robert Redford), with whom she begins a passionate romance. Karen and Denys' love story is woven around the wild and beautiful nature of Africa, but their different lifestyles and expectations also pose challenges to their relationship.
