7th century Jutland is a battlefield of bloody battles and power-hungry intrigues. Crown Prince Amhed witnesses the murder of his father and brother with his own eyes. The culprit is his uncle Ferge, who after the murder usurps the crown and queen for himself. Amled avoids his own death by pretending to be mad. Eventually he is banished to England.
