Jumalan morsian

An elderly Nenets woman in a tepee on the Yamal Peninsula in northern Russia tells of her early life as a betrothed to a deity for the amusement of a young blind girl. In Nenets culture, a girl child can be married to the most sacred Num before or after birth. The lonely old Numd’ Syarda (which literally means ‘bound to Num’) entertains the blind young Ilne (‘giver of life’) with stories of how she became one of these chosen few.
