The film, based on true events, is set in 1950s New Zealand. A crazy love affair develops between two teenage girls who are obsessed with imaginative play, which leads to a horrific bloodbath. Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings), who was still known for his splatter films at the time, creates a beautifully twisted melodrama. Kate Winslet later became a star, Melanie Lynskey ended up in Half-Blood.
