After their father is taken from them, Rocco moves with his mother and brother from the misfortune of southern Italy to the industrial city of Milan to start a new life. Strong family ties keep them together through many difficult trials.

The love between the brothers is put to the test when the passionate Simone and the much more sensitive Rocco fall in love with the same street girl, Nadia. A bitter fight begins, culminating in murder.
